Lyons QQC

Quote: "At stake in this discussion are the peoples defined by the writing itself; thus one important tenet of rhetorical sovereignty would be to allow Indians to have some say about the nature of their textual representations. The best way to honor this creed would be to have Indian people themselves do the writing,"

Question: How do you feel about the way America tends to rewrite the narratives of certain cultures in their own context?

  1. Hi Autumn! Personally, I believe the way in which America rewrites minority culture's narratives is disturbing. As Lyons points out in this quotation, the only people who can truly account for a people's history is the people of that culture themselves. I do not mean this to say that if you are not of a specific culture you are not eligible to write about said culture, but I mean it in that people of that culture will know their own history better than any outsider. America's tendency to take the history of indigenous peoples away from them needs to come to an end.

  2. I think Americans rewrite the narratives of certain cultures into their own context because they want people to conform to their way of writing and to learn English to communicate with the people who live in America. I think this is completely wrong because people invaded the Natives' land and try to teach them a completely different way of living and speaking. Americans love to change people to be more like them.

  3. Personally I think it's very one sided how narratives are rewritten. It is almost like we change it to the way we want to see it instead of what it actually is. I don't think this is right or ok because we are not getting the full narrative!

  4. I think that it is a huge slap in the face to the culture that get rewritten. I see it as sort of a power move in order for history to be remembered in the way that America wants it to be. This isn't the first time this has happened and may not even be the last. It is not done for the particular people that get their culture stripped, but more for our society so that we can make ourselves feel more comfortable by forcing others to be like us.
