Quote: “And obviously, abbreviation is also a kind of substitution, hence a kind of “displacement,” while it is also necessarily a kind of “condensation.” And language is an abbreviation radically.”

Question: Can you point out any words that have changed in meaning or have become offensive, but were not offensive in the past?

  1. I think the word "whore" has become offensive now. I believe pretty early on it was only used as a job title and was not meant to be offensive, just a way of life where now it can come off as a pretty offensive term to woman

  2. There is a multitude of words that have been changed in meaning and social context as society moves forward. One I find particularly interesting is "homosexual". Originally I believed it was a neutral word but further found that people within the LGBTQ community have a derogatory context applied because hate groups often use it to cite mental issues within the preferred sex.

  3. There are many words which over the years have changed in meaning or at least in the context they are used. An example would be "fag" becoming a derogatory remark towards homosexuals when it used to be a term for the butt of a cigarette.
