QQC - Lyons

Quote:  “Thinking in one’s own cultural referents leads to conceptualizing in one’s own world view which, in turn, leads to disagreement with and eventual opposition to the dominant ideology”

Question: Do you agree with this idea? Or do you think it's possible to stay true to our own culture without opposing others?

  1. I believe this idea is accurate to cultures that are completely different from eachother. Often times people from different cultures treat others as less and feel superior to them. On the other hand, I think different cultures that share the same general location often treat them better since they share generally the same values in their cultures.

  2. It may be more challenging to respect the values of other cultures than it is to stay true to our own, yet i believe both are possible. I personally have many friends from different ethnic and religious backgrounds, and i generally feel that we all respect each others opposing viewpoints. In my opinion, we are all raised with different values and beliefs, and to look down at someone or to think less of them due to their culture and way of life is simply wrong and not what we should do as humans

  3. I think it's impossible to stay true to our own culture without opposing others. The reason is no matter what I believe, there's going to be someone who disagrees or has a conflicting view point from myself. The idea that we can stay true to our own culture without opposing others is just unrealistic and utopian.
