QQC #7

Quote: "The value of the self derives not from a recognition of the uniqueness and inherent value of each living being but from gaining control over others."

Question: Do you agree with this statement? What role do you think this need to "gain control over others" can play in everyday life?

  1. Hey Autumn! In a sense I do agree with this statement, not because I thrive off of power and persuading others, but because I think we can all agree that there is a rush of emotions that we feel through our bodies when we gain/are in control of others. I do not believe that we as humans feel the need to gain control over others, but on the other hand, maybe we do? As Griffin and Foss point out in this reading gaining control over others can be as simple as suggesting that a peer takes a specific class and them taking that advice. We persuade and gain power in all sorts of ways, so maybe there is a part of this patriarchal rhetoric that is innate in humans.

  2. I also agree with this statement because everyone in a while you need to take control of a situation that needs to be handled in the best way possible. Gaining control of others can play a role in everyday life just in the work force. You try to be better than your coworkers by gaining control over them to impress your boss.
