Quote: "An 'ideology' is like a spirit taking up its abode in a body: it makes that body hop around in certain ways; and that same body would have hopped around in different ways had a different ideology happened to inhabit it."

Question:Are different ideologies a source of persuasion? or simply different ways a body has chosen to think? or kind of both?

  1. Hey Bella! I think that different ideologies that people hold are too complex to place in one category or the other. But I think what the quote is saying is that ideologies affect the way that people act. For example, someone who is conservative is bound to act a different way that someone who is on the far left politically. Or a Muslim will act differently than a Pagan. Ideologies create reason for certain actions and reason for abstaining from certain actions. I think that ideologies get adopted by people who have been persuaded to adopt them, but I don't think that they can be reduced to only encompass persuasion or thought. I believe that there is a complexity of both. I hope this helps!

  2. I think it is capable of being both, and depends on the intention of whoever is pushing the ideology onto someone. There are several instances in history where an ideology is used for persuasion and ultimately manipulation. There are also instances where ideologies are simply tools for growing intellectually and emotionally. I think it is important to take certain ideologies with a grain of salt and not to fully submerse yourself into one, but different things work for different people.
